Senior Researchers


  • Prof. Jose Antonio Plaza Plaza (Group Leader)

PhD. Jose Antonio Plaza was born in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona), Spain, in 1968. He received his Physicist degree (1992) and his Ph. D. degree in Electronics Engineering from the Autonomus University of Barcelona (1997). Since 1995, he has the degree of Specialist in simulation by the Finite Element Method. He has been working at the Micro- and Nanosystems Department at the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona IMB-CNM (CSIC) in Cerdanyola del valles (Barcelona) since 2000. He has been focused on technology development, design, simulation and characterization of Micro- and Nanosystems. Since 2005, his research is focused on MEMS and NEMS for life science applications. He is coauthor of 90 research papers and more than 100 conference contributions.


  • Prof. Jaume Esteve Tintó

Jaume Esteve was born in Parets del Vallès (Barcelona), Spain in 1961. He received the M.S and the Ph.D. degree in Physics from the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1988. He is a Research Professor at IMB-CNM (CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain, leading the Nanotechnology group, having directed 20 master theses and 7 doctoral dissertations. Prof. Esteve is a technologist, whose expertise has produced fruitful systems in the field of microtechnology, holding 6 patents and several national and international research awards. He has co-authored more than 100 papers, one book and has been PI in 16 National Projects and 3 European Projects among which are MICROBIOL, NANOMASS I and II. He has chaired several international conferences and is a usual reviewer in reputable scientific journals such as Sensors and Actuators and IEEE Journal of Micro-electromechanical systems.





  • Dr. Juan Pablo Agusil Antonoff

JPablo contactJuan Pablo Agusil was born in Naucalpan (Estado de México), Mexico in 1985. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Iberoamerican University (UIA), Mexico City in 2009. In 2010 he obtained his Master’s Degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the University of Barcelona (UB) and finished his PhD in Nanoscience in 2015 in the field of surface functionalization and micropatterning. He is currently working at the IMB-CNM (CSIC), where his research is focused on the design, fabrication and implementation of micro- and nanotools for various cell biology applications.



  • Dr. Gonzalo Murillo Rodríguez

He received his Electronic Engineering Degree from the Universidad de Granada (Spain) in 2007 and his PhD at the Electronic Engineering Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 2011. His PhD was focused on vibration-based energy harvesting. During his PhD, he did research stays   with Prof. ZL Wang group at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA, USA), with Dr. Z. Davis group at Nanotech-DTU (Denmark), and at CEA-Leti (France) with Dr. G. Despesse group. After his PhD he was a Research Fellow at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Portugal and recently, he joined the Micro and Nano Tools group IMB-CNM (CSIC). His current research field is the piezoelectric energy harvesting based on AlN thin-films and ZnO NWs especially for its application on self-powered flexible implantable and wearable devices.

  • María Isabel Arjona Hidalgo

Maribel contactMaría Isabel Arjona was born in Priego de Córdoba, Córdoba, Spain, in 1988. She obtained her degree in Physics (5-year degree) from University of Granada (UGR) in 2013. She is finishing her Master’s degree in Physics of Complex Systems at National Distance Education University (UNED). Currently she is a PhD student at the Micro and Nano tools group at IMB-CNM (CSIC), with the financial support through a research studentship of the FPI Program of the MINECO, Spain.  Her research is focused on the design, fabrication and characterization of micro and nanotools for living cells applications.



  • Carolina Vargas Estevez

Carolina was born in Bogotá (Colombia). She get graduated fromUniversidad Nacional de Colombia  (Bogotá, Colombia) with a BSc degree in Electronic Engineering in 2009. She received her master's degree of Biomedical Engineering at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in 2012 . Recently, she joined at Microelectronic Institute of Barcelona IMB-CNM (CSIC) to pursue her PhD at Micro and Nanotechnologies department, working on the development of Nanotools for cell manipulation and study.  




  • Rodrigo Gómez Martínez

Rodrigo was born in Medellin (Colombia). He received  his Electronic Engineer degree in Universidad de Antioquia (Medellin -Colombia) and his master's degree in Electrical Engineering at Universidad de los Andes (Bogot'a - Colombia). He worked as engineer at the Technology Department at Clean Room facilities of the Microelectronic Institute of Barcelona IMB-CNM (CSIC) in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona - Spain) since 2015. His research work is focused on Biomedical applications, Cell biology, MEMS and  NEMS technologies.



  • Edgardo Uriel Leon Salguero

Edgardo contactoEdgardo Leon Salguero born in Caborca (Sonora) Mexico in 1984, received his Mechanical Engineering degree from the Instituto Tecnologico de Hermosillo (ITH), in Hermosillo, Mexico in 2008. In 2012 he received his Masters degree in Advanced Materials by Centro de Investigacion en Materiales Avanzados (CIMAV), in the field of Energy Harvesting, during his Masters studies, realized a research stay in University of Texas at Dallas (UTDallas) with Dr B. Gnade, in the field of piezoelectric micro energy harvesters based on Relaxor films, currently doing a PhD research stay at IMB-CNM (CSIC), working with energy harvesters based on AlN and ZnO films.

  • Marta Duch Llobera

Marta Duch was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1967. She received her Technical Engineer degree in Chemistry from the Polytechnical University od Catalunya in 1992. Currently, she is working as Microsystems Head Engineer at Clean Room facilities of the Microelectronic Institute of Barcelona IMB-CNM (CSIC) in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona- Spain). Her work is focused on microelectronics, MEMS and NEMS technologies.




  • Marcos Duque

Marcos contactoMarcos Duque was born in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelona), Spain, in 1990. Electronic Telecommunications Engineer for Autonomus University of Barcelona (UAB) in 2016, he is currently working at IMB-CNM (CSIC) in the design and CAD simulations of micro and nanotools for cell analysis.
